The educational project has been developped with the support of the Public Health Agency of Barcelona (ASPB)

This is the Mosquito Alert webquest

It’s intended for high school students, to work on it means to be part of the Mosquito Alert’s team, and so, to help with the expansion control of the two mosquitoes that are giving lots of health problems.

Before we start, we invite you to read the EVALUATION part so that you know the objectives you will have to achieve.

INITIAL SURVEY

First of all we need to know what you think about citizen science.
Student’s survey (questionnaire)Teacher’s survey (questionnaire)

FIRST STEPS

¿Do you know why it’s said the tiger mosquito is an invader species?
¡Look at this prezi and you you’ll understand it better!

Tasks

The scientists of this project are working on the mosquito population control and surveillance. From all the tasks we have to carry out, we get a little help from the science-citizens and get the tasks done faster and more effectively with them.
That’s why, your work will be divided in four tasks:
  1. Entomologic training: to qualify you as a sciences citizens.
  2. Technologic training: To have a good command of the work tools.
  3. Community Mapping: Journey to locate the breeding points of your zone.
  4. Analysis and final products: Materials creation to spread the information.
We advise you to make groups of three to work with the different tasks. Each member of the group should be an expert in different topics.

Task 1 – ENTOMOLOGIC TRAINING

To be a citizen-scientist you need to learn about who is our enemy. Here you have some links that will give you more information about the mosquitos, and also there are citizen science links so that you can understand better how the citizens can participate in a real science project.

If you have already done the groups of three members, now it’s time to organize the different roles:

ADULTS MOSQUITO EXPERT

Has to take a look at the following links and has to answer these questions that will be corrected by your teacher:

BREEDING SITES EXPERT

lugar_cria

Has to take a look at the following links and should answer these questions that will be corrected by your teacher.

CITIZEN SCIENCE EXPERT

Has to take a look at the following links and should answer these questions that will be corrected by your teacher:

If you still can’t answer all the questions, here you have other links with more information:

TEST YOURSELF – TASK 1

The three experts all together have to do the following form to validate their training.
Evaluation task form
(You pass the test if you get 9 correct answers)

Task 2 – Technologic training: to have a good command ot the work tools

¡You passed the first task! Congratulations. Now you have to become experts in technology tools.
Again, you have to distribute the different roles:

MOSQUITO ALERT’S APP EXPERT

Has to download the application and analyze how it works, take a look at the different options and get to know the main functions. You can help yourself with the following links:

PHOTOGRAFY EXPERT

consejo 02

has to take pictures of a tiny object with the mobile phone to test how it works. You can help yourself taking a look at the following links and learning the most important characteristics to take a good photo.

  • Some advices to take useful photos. (web)
  • Citizen tips to take a photo with a good quality. (pdf)
  • More tips to take good pictures. (video)

TERRITORY EXPERT

Has to take a look at the following links to understand how all the information of the project is collected in the map. Finally, the expert has to find a paper map of the track and has to agree with the other groups on how they are going to distribute the zone.

TEST YOURSELF – TASK 2

The three experts all together have to do the following form to validate their training.

Evaluation task form
(You pass the test if you get 15 correct answers)

Task 3 – COMMUNITY MAPPING

¡You passed two tasks! Congratulations. Now it’s time to do the field research. Don’t forget that now it’s time to work more than ever in a cooperative way.

  • THE EXPERT OF THE REGISTER FILES has to collect all the information in a paper and has to use the mobile phone when it’s time to take a picture.
Regiter files of the breeding sites
Register files of the mosquito samples
  • THE EXPERT OF THE APPLICATION is in charge to introduce all the information in the App.
  • THE EXPERT OF THE TERRITORY is in charge to write down all the information in the paper map.

To be sure where are you located, it can be useful to have another mobile phone and turn on the ‘Google Maps app’.

Last thing, we have prepared a summary guide with the material you need and the steps you have to follow:

Task 4 – MATERIAL CREATION FOR THE DIFUSION OF THE PROJECT

This first citizen science work is getting to the end. After you have participated in a science Project, it’s time to share it.

Stage 1: To analyze all the work together:

1- Look over all the steps you have followed from the first session.
2- Unify the boards and the maps done for each group.
3- ¿Why do you think is important that the citizens have to be informed about the Project?

Stage 2: Each group has to choose, minimum, one final product and carry it out. We remind you that you can consult how these products are going to be evaluated: evaluation rubric.

1- Prezi Presentation explaining all the participating process.
2- Scientific poster with the project results.
3- Video lasting maximum 1.30 minutes about the diffusion of the Mosquito Alert project and the prevention steps.
4- Information training Diptych/Triptych (crossword, test, 7 differences…)

Stage 3: Once you have done the final products and charged in the network, fill this form.

PROJECT EVALUATION

A person who collaborates in a citizen science project has to be observant, patient, cooperative, creative and rigorous. Now you have to evaluate all the work done from three different perspectives:

1- To evaluate the process we have:
– The two online forms with a mark of the task 1 and 2.
– The register files and the maps you have used on the task 3.

2- To assess the group we have:
– This evaluation questionnaire to fill out individually.

3- To evaluate the results we have:
– All the validated data by from the Scientifics in the task 3.
– The rubric for each final product done in the task 4.

To calculate the final result of participation at the project, use this table.

FINAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Finally, we need to know what you think about citizen science after you participation.
Student’s survey (questionnaire)  /  Teacher’s survey (questionnaire)
We have prepared a practical guide to make the Webquest execution easier.
Refill this form to apply for it.
