Last 20th and 21st February, Mar Jambou, part of the communication team, attended the course Protagonists of science in the media, at the RTVE institute in Madrid.
This course was born from the need to strengthen the presence of science in the media, and with the help of great journalism professionals, it is a unique experience to strengthen ties between these two worlds: science and journalism.
This course is made possible thanks to different entities, such as CSIC, Indagando TV and RTVE. This collaboration allows a dialogue between the different actors, and intends to facilitate scientific messages to a quality scientific dissemination.

A bridge between science and journalism
The course was structured in two days where participants got an inside look at the workings of the audiovisual and radio media. The first day was dedicated to television, exploring the process of creating and broadcasting science news. The participants worked on news writing, script writing, statement gathering and image recording, always with the support of a technical team specialised in audiovisual production. This exercise allowed the participants to experience first-hand the pressure and demands of journalism in real time.

The second day focused on radio, with the production of a programme that included interviews with colleagues, simulated broadcasts and, as a closing event, a press conference.
In addition, attendees were taken on a guided tour of the RTVE facilities in Torrespaña, a unique opportunity to get an inside look at one of the main news production centres in Spain.
A great learning experience for Mosquito Alert
For the Mosquito Alert team, this experience has provided new approaches and knowledge to further improve our capacities in science communication and dissemination. The possibility to understand up close how news is constructed and disseminated will allow us to improve the way we share our knowledge with society.
This course is a great opportunity for scientists communicators, communicators and journalists interested in science communication. The interaction with journalism professionals and the practice in real scenarios reinforce the importance of a rigorous, accessible and attractive dissemination.
From Mosquito Alert we will try to apply these lessons to continue bringing science to the public in an effective and close way.
