The tiger mosquito in Spain
It has already colonized the Mediterranean coast of Spain, especially for the coast area of Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Southern Spain.
The tiger mosquito was first detected in Spain in 2004, specifically in Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona). It is believed that the entry was from France, where a few years earlier had been detected in used tire stores. During the last eleven years, the tiger mosquito has expanded vastly and rapidly along the coast and has advanced inland.
- In Spain, there are a total of 540 municipalities affected, according to data from 2004 to 2015.
- En 2017 it was first detected in Madrid and found again in 2018.
- In Summe 2018 it was first detected in several municipalities of the Extremadura region.
In Spain, there are no populations of yellow fever mosquito but in 2017 there was a punctual detection in the Canary Islands. However, the global increase in average temperature and globalization could favor its arrival.
Global distribution
Currently, the tiger mosquito is found along the Mediterranean coast and is spread throughout Asia and South America. The yellow fever mosquito is found in Africa, in countries close to the tropics and subtropics, northern Brazil and Southeast Asia. Also in the southeastern United States and Northern Australia, on the East coast of the Black Sea and on the Island of Madeira.
